About the Michael J. Manning Memorial Scholarship

The Association established this scholarship in memory of longtime member Michael J. Manning who died suddenly in 2004.

In addition to being a dedicated husband and father to wife Pat and their sons Jason and Kevin, Mike was a dear friend to many members of the Association. He also played a mean game of basketball and was a great golfing partner.

Mike lived in Troy and had a distinguished career in the oil business for the past thirty-years. He had been the terminal sales manager for Sprague since 1998, and previously was the Albany Sales Manager for Mirabito Energy Products, and the Albany Sales Manager for CIBRO Petroleum Products.

The Upstate New York Energy Association (UNYEA) offers this scholarship to assist employees and children of both UNYEA members and their employees. The Michael J. Manning Memorial Scholarship Award provides scholarships to students attending college or vocational programs at any accredited post secondary institution in New York.


MICHAEL J. MANNING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

WINNER OF THE 2022 MICHAEL J. MANNING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Michael J. Manning Scholarship Award ($1,500) has been awarded to Shana M. Nerone of Saugerties, NY. Shana graduated from Saugerties High School and plans to attend SUNY Brockport to major in Nursing.

Shana has excelled academically in in a demanding curriculum, maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Yearbook Committee and Builders Club.

Shana's teacher states, "Shana is epitome of someone who does difficult things every day and succeeds. Shana has had many hurdles in her life, she has always worked harder than everyone else and has succeeded. Her motivation and determination to excel is unparalleled."

Shana's mother, Leann Nerone, is a Logistics Specialist for Main Care Energy in Albany, NY.

WINNER OF THE 2021 MICHAEL J. MANNING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Michael J. Manning Scholarship Award ($1,500) has been awarded to Nicholas A. Guerra of Walden, NY. Nicholas graduated from Wallkill Senior High School and plans to attend Northeastern University to major in Health Science.

Nicholas has excelled academically in his advanced and honors courses, maintaining a 4.0 grade point average and ranked 7th in his class of 230. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and Student Government Association where he served as President. In addition, Nicholas was Captain of the Varsity Soccer Team, and received the Coach's Award.

Nicholas's teacher and SGA Advisor states, "Nicholas is a natural team player, leader, respectful, encourages others to excel, and is a role model for our school. His empathy for others, steadfast optimism, and natural leadership qualities always come through. He has always been willing to lend a helping hand to those in need."

Nicholas's father, Jose Guerra, is a Fuel Delivery Driver for Main Care Energy in Newburgh, NY.

WINNER OF THE 2020 MICHAEL J. MANNING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Michael J. Manning Scholarship Award has been awarded to Hailey J. Ward of Hillsdale, NY. Hailey graduated from Taconic Hills Central High School in June and plans to attend SUNY Delhi to major in Construction Management.

Hailey is a scholar athlete who has excelled academically in her honors high school courses as well as college level courses, maintaining a 3.5 grade point average. In addition, she is a member of Girls Volleyball Team, Track & Field, Student Council, SADD, All County Band, Jazz All County Chorus, and Select Choir. Hailey is also active in her local church and works pert-time at Catamount Ski Resort.

Hailey's High School Principal states, "Hailey is intelligent, thoughtful and kind-hearted. She demonstrates mature, responsible decision making with her future planning."

Hailey's father, Philip Ward, is an Operations Manager for Main Care Energy in Chatham, NY.

WINNER OF THE 2019 MICHAEL J. MANNING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Michael J. Manning Scholarship Award has been awarded to Melena C. Andrade of Albany, NY. Melena graduated from Colonie Central High School in June and plans to attend SUNY New Paltz to major in Fine Arts.

Melena has excelled academically in her high school courses as well as college courses, maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. In addition, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club where she serves as Vice President, Woman's Empowerment Club, Executive Club, Drama Club, Opera Club, Arts Club and Orchestra. Melena is also a Junior Interpreter at the Albany Institute of History and Art, a volunteer for Operation Doggy Treats and Tutors for the ENL Homework Club.

Melena's English teacher states, "Melena has raw artistic talent, and her artistry is revealed not only in the stunning drawings and paintings she creates, but in her writing as well. She takes her responsibility as a student seriously. Her constant positivity and eagerness to help others is indicative of her compassionate heart. She yearns to make the world a better place."

Melena's father, Constancio Andrade, is an HVAC Technician for Main Care Energy in Albany, NY.

Winner of The 2018 Michael J. Manning Memorial Scholarship Award

The Michael J. Manning Scholarship Award ($1,500) has been awarded to Giavanna M. Gumlaw of Troy, NY. Giavanna graduated from Troy High School in June and plans to attend SUNY Delhi in Delhi, NY to major in Animal Sciences.

Giavanna has excelled academically in her high school courses as well as college courses, maintaining a 3.9 grade point average. In addition, she is a member of the Spanish Club and Varsity Cheerleading. Giavanna is also involved in the Cheer Intensity All-stars and through this organization performs community service at local food pantries and nursing homes.

Giavanna's Guidance Counselor states, "Giavanna is a poised and confident young lady who is a highly motivated, hard-working student committed to her education. She is liked by both her peers and faculty. She is humble in her accomplishments and has the ability to interact with people of various backgrounds and cultures."

Giavanna's father, William Gumlaw, is a Supervisor for Main Care Energy in Albany, NY
